What is BS EN IEC 62990‑2 about?

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 gives the guidance on the selection, installation, use and maintenance of electrical equipment used for the measurement of toxic gases and vapours in workplace atmospheres.

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 gives technical specifications measurement tasks, selection of equipment, design, operation and installation of fixed toxic gas detection equipment, maintenance and calibration for gas detectors.

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 is applicable to equipment whose purpose is to provide an indication, alarm or other output function to give a warning of the presence of a toxic gas or vapour in the atmosphere and in some cases to initiate automatic or manual protective actions.

Note 1: BS EN IEC 62990‑2 includes equipment fixed equipment, transportable equipment, and portable equipment.

Note 2: BS EN IEC 62990‑2 also cover equipment defined within IEC 62990-1

Note 3: BS EN IEC 62990‑2 is applicable to equipment in which the sensor automatically generates an electrical signal when gas is present.

Note 4: BS EN IEC 62990‑2 covers all the functions necessary from selection to ongoing maintenance for a successful gas detection operation.

Who is BS EN IEC 62990‑2 for?

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 on gas detectors in workplace atmosphere is applicable to:

  • Manufacturers of gas detectors
  • Service providers and installers for gas detectors
  • Suppliers and dealers of gas detector
  • Retailers and distributors of gas detectors

Why should you use BS EN IEC 62990‑2?

A gas detector is a part of a safety system, that detects the presence of gases that might be hazardous, in an area or work site. It is very important to detect the presence of such gases and take measures to eliminate such events them in order to ensure the safety of the working area.

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 introduces the toxic gas detection equipment which can be used for your safety, whenever there is  possibility of a hazard to life or adverse health effects caused by the accumulation of a toxic gas or vapour.

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 specifies for you all the functions necessary from selection to ongoing maintenance for a successful gas detection operation. However, performance capability alone cannot ensure that the use of such equipment will properly safeguard life and health where toxic gases and vapours might be present.

BS EN IEC 62990‑2 establishes that the safety obtained depends heavily upon correct selection, installation, calibration and periodic maintenance of the equipment. These combined with knowledge of the limitations of the detection technique enables you to set out standardized and safe workplace atmosphere.
