What is BS EN 46-1- Wood preservatives about?
BS EN 46 discusses wood preservatives. BS EN 46-1 is the first part of BS EN 46 multi-series and discusses the determination of the preventive action against recently hatched larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus, application by surface treatment.
BS EN 46-1 specifies a method for the determination of the preventive action of a wood preservative against recently hatched larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus (Linnaeus) when the preservative is applied as a surface treatment to wood.
This method is applicable to:
- Water-insoluble chemicals which are being studied as active insecticides
- Organic formulations, as supplied or as prepared in the laboratory by dilution of concentrates
- Organic water-dispersible formulations as supplied or as prepared in the laboratory by dilution of concentrates
- And water-soluble materials, for example, salts
Note 1: The method is applicable whether or not the test specimens have been subjected to appropriate ageing procedures
Who is BS EN 46-1-Wood preservatives for?
BS EN 46-1 on wood preservatives is useful for:
- Wooden furniture manufacturers
- Manufacturers using wood as raw materials
- Wooden products suppliers
- Testing laboratories
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS EN 46-1- Wood preservatives?
BS EN 46-1 describes a laboratory method of testing which gives a basis for the assessment of the preventive action of a wood preservative, when applied as a surface treatment, against recently hatched larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus.
This method in BS EN 46-1 makes it possible to determine whether recently hatched larvae are capable of boring through the treated surface of a susceptible wood species and of surviving in the untreated part of the test specimen.
This laboratory method in BS EN 46-1 provides one criterion by which the value of a preservative can be assessed. In making this assessment, the methods by which the preservative may be applied should be considered. This test is of particular interest when applied to test specimens that have been subjected to an ageing procedure.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 46-1:2016 supersedes BS EN 46-1:2009, which is withdrawn BS EN 46-1:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 46-1:2009. These include:
- Introduction of new harmonized specifications for wood quality
- Option to omit control test specimens treated with the solvent or diluents only when the solvent or diluents is the water of drinking quality
- Determination of validity of the test by using an X-ray apparatus added.
