What is this BS 8213-4 about?
BS 8213-4 is the fourth part of multiple series that gives recommendations for the surveying and installation of non-load-bearing windows and external door sets of any material, to be installed vertically (within 15°) into the external face of buildings.
Note: The recommendations contained in BS 8213-4 do not cover the site assembly of individual components.
This part of BS 8213-4 does not apply:
- Load-bearing windows (other than bay poles), load-bearing door sets, roof windows or roof lights, or fire door sets and assemblies
- Curtain or ribbon walling, but might apply to separate window and door elements within those types of assemblies
- Good business practice issues such as warranties and complaints

What’s changed since the last update?
BS 8213-4:2016 supersedes BS 8213-4:2007, which is withdrawn.
This is a full revision of the standard, and introduces the following principal changes:
- Updating of recommendations to reflect changes to legislation made since 2007
- Updating of recommendations to reflect changes in glazing, sealant, and construction techniques
- Introduction of guidance on hazardous materials
