What is BS EN 61400-25-2 about?

The EN 61400-25 series is a European Standard that discusses wind turbines. The EN 61400-25 series is on the communications between wind power plant components such as wind turbines and actors such as SCADA systems. Internal communication within wind power plant components is outside the scope of the IEC 61400-25 series.

BS EN 61400-25-2 is one of the parts of the series that specifies the information model of devices and functions related to wind power plant applications. In particular, it specifies the compatible logical node names and data names for communication between wind power plant components. This includes the relationship between logical devices, logical nodes and data. The names defined in the IEC 61400-25 series are used to build the hierarchical object references applied for communicating with components in wind power plants.

BS EN 61400-25-2 specifies common attribute types and common data classes related to wind turbine applications. In particular, it specifies common data classes for:

  • Setpoint value
  • status value
  • Alarm
  • Command
  • Event counting
  • State timing
  • Alarm set status

Who is BS EN 61400-25-2 for?

BS EN 61400-25-2 on communications for monitoring and control of wind power plants is useful for:

  • Wind turbine manufacturers
  • Wind power transmission system operators (TSOs)
  • Wind power distribution system operators (DSOs)
  • Wind power plant designers and developers
  • Wind energy research institutions
  • Wind energy certifying bodies and standardization groups

Why should you use BS EN 61400-25-2?

The wind power plant information model and the information exchange model, constitute an interface between client and server. The wind power plant information model serves as an interpretation frame for accessible wind power plant data.

BS EN 61400-25-2 provides you with the information model of devices and functions related to wind power plant applications.

Guidance in BS EN 61400-25-2 can help you order to provide a uniform communication basis for the monitoring and control of wind power plants and aids for efficient exchange of information exchange and the mapping to communication protocols.

BS EN 61400-25-2 can assist you in the information exchange methods, and to standardize the communication. BS EN 61400-25-2 can be used as a basis to which procurement specifications and contracts could easily refer.

Adopting BS EN 61400-25-2 enable components from different vendors to communicate with other components, at any location. Object-oriented data structures can make the engineering and handling of large amounts of information provided by wind power plant less time-consuming and more efficient.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 61400-25-2:2015 supersedes BS EN 61400-25-2:2007 which is withdrawn. BS EN 61400-25-2:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61400-25-2:2007. These include:

  • Harmonization with Common Data Classes in Edition 2 of IEC 61850-7-3
  • Harmonization with Logical node classes in Edition 2 of IEC 61850-7-4
  • Harmonization with Information models in IEC 61850-7-410 and IEC 61850-7-420
  • Reduction of overlap between standards and simplification by increased referencing
  • Extension of Data objects for operation of smart grids (in US and other areas)
