What is BS EN IEC 6140027-1 about? 

BS EN IEC 6140027-1 is a part of multi-series standard IEC 61400. BS EN IEC 61400-27-1 specifies requirements to ensure the engineering integrity of wind turbine blades as well as an appropriate level of operational safety throughout the design lifetime. It includes requirements for aerodynamic and structural design, material selection, evaluation and testing, manufacture (including associated quality management), transportation, installation, operation and maintenance of the blades. 

BS EN IEC 6140027-1 provides the detailed basis for fulfilling the current requirements of the IECRE system, as well as other IEC standards relevant to wind turbine blades, with respect to certification. When used for certification, the applicability of each portion of this document should be determined on the basis of the extent of certification, and associated certification modules per the IECRE system. 

Note 1: BS EN IEC 6140027-1 is intended to be applied to rotor blades for all wind turbines.

Why should you use BS EN IEC 6140027-1? 

The increasing use of wind energy in power systems implies that Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) need to use dynamic models of wind power generation for power system stability studies.  

BS EN IEC 6140027-1 discusses dynamic electrical simulation models for wind turbines and wind power plants, which helps you in specifying the wind turbine models, that can either be used in wind power plant models or to represent wind turbines without wind power plant relationships.  

Users of BS EN IEC 6140027-1 can achieve the purpose to specify generic dynamic models, which can be applied in power system stability studies. It also states that apart from the wind turbine models, the wind power plant model may include models for auxiliary equipment such as STATCOMs which are often used in wind power plants. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN IEC 6140027-1:2020 supersedes BS EN 61400271:2015, which is withdrawn. 

BS EN IEC 6140027-1:2020 includes the following changes: 

  • "Wind turbines" changed to "Generic models" because wind power plant models are also included, and the model validation is moved to IEC 61400-27-2 
  • Specification of models for wind power plants including plant control, communication system model, and aggregation procedure for power collection system in addition to the wind turbine models in the previous edition 
  • Moving validation procedures for wind turbine models from this edition to part 27-2, the inclusion of model for STATCOM, the inclusion of electrical components modules 
  • A more detailed modular structure separating wind turbine control into pitch control and generator system control and extracting grid measurement modules from the control modules. Figures are revised accordingly
