What is BS EN ISO 14732 - Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters about?
BS EN ISO 14732:2025 is a standard that specifies the requirements for the qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters involved in mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials.
It ensures that these personnel are properly qualified to control welding parameters and set up welding equipment.
Who is BS EN ISO 14732 - Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters for?
This standard is intended for professionals involved in welding operations, including:
- Welding engineers;
- Welding coordination personnel;
- QA/QC personnel;
- Manufacturers;
- Auditors;
- Inspectors;
- Metalworkers;
- Fabricators; and
- Welding foremen.
It applies to industry sectors where welding qualifications are required such as aerospace, automotive, construction, industrial, oil & gas, energy, and transport.
What does BS EN ISO 14732 - Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters cover?
BS EN ISO 14732:2025 covers:
- The qualification of welding operators and weld setters for mechanized and automatic welding processes.
- Requirements for the functional knowledge of the welding unit.
- Guidance on the necessary knowledge of welding technology.
- The validity period for qualification and procedures for revalidation or revocation.
- The mutual recognition by examining bodies of welding operator qualifications in
- various fields of applications, including fusion, resistance, and arc stud welding.
It does not apply to personnel who do not control or adjust welding parameters and are not involved in the setup of welding equipment.
It also does not cover friction stir welding or friction stir spot welding (which are covered by ISO 25239-3 and ISO 18785-3).
Why should you use BS EN ISO 14732 - Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters?
This standard:
- Ensures personnel are properly qualified to perform safe and high-quality welding in mechanized and automatic processes.
- Helps organizations meet legal and regulatory requirements, especially within the EU and UK, where it is mandatory.
- Provides a framework for mutual recognition of qualifications, making it easier for professionals to work across different fields.
- Is expected to be harmonized (Europe) and designated (UK) to provide compliance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), Simple Pressure Vessels Directive (SPVD 2014/29/EU) and UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, SI 2016 No 1105 as amended.
- Enhances consistency and reliability in welding operations, improving overall manufacturing quality.
What’s changed?
The 2025 revision supersedes BS EN ISO 14732:2013. This latest edition improves the standard’s clarity, ensuring better guidance for qualification processes in welding industries.
Other changes include:
- Clause 4 (Qualification): Revised for improved clarity on qualification methods, now separated into subclauses for fusion welding, resistance welding and arc stud welding.
- New Clause 5 (Variables and Qualification Range): Defines qualification variables for mechanized and automatic welding.
- Expected to be harmonized and cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), and designated by UK government, reinforcing its legal importance. Once designated it provides a presumption of conformity to relevant essential requirements in GB law related to welding personnel for pressure equipment.
