What is ISO 6847 about?

ISO 6847 is an international standard that covers specifications for welding consumables. ISO 6847 specifies the procedure to be used for the deposition of a weld metal pad for chemical analysis.

ISO 6847 applies to deposition of a weld metal pad by use of covered electrodes, wire electrodes for gas shielded metal arc welding, tubular cored electrodes for gas shielded metal arc welding and for non-gas shielded metal arc welding, solid rods and tubular cored rods for gas tungsten arc welding, and wire-flux and strip-flux combinations for submerged arc welding or electroslag welding and cladding.

Note 1: ISO 6847 is applicable to welding consumables for non-alloy and fine grain steels, high strength steels, creep-resisting steels, stainless and heat-resisting steels, nickel and nickel alloys, and copper and copper alloys.

Who is ISO 6847 for?

ISO 6847 on welding consumables is applicable to:

  • Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
  • Welding consumables manufacturers
  • Sheet metal manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of pressure vessels
  • Manufacturers of aircraft & aerospace
  • Shipbuilding industry
  • Welding equipment manufacturers

Why should you use ISO 6847?

Deposition welding is a procedure used to polish surfaces as well as to repair or modify existing components.

ISO 6847 discusses and provides you with the procedures to be used for the deposition of a weld metal pad for chemical analysis. It proves to be very useful in various applications of welding consumables which helps you in designing welding procedures and increases in efficiency of welding operations.

The guidelines in ISO 6847 helps you with the method to prepare high-quality and durable weld metal pads that are in compliance with global standard methods. It provides simplified weld pad preparation and broadens the range of welding processes and filler metals. It also adds up to the use of strips with the submerged arc welding and electroslag welding processes.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 6847:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 6847:2013, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 6847:2020 has the addition of provisions for strip-flux combinations for use with cladding with the submerged arc welding and electroslag welding processes with respect to BS EN ISO 6847:2013.
