What is BS EN 102177 about?

BS EN 102177 specifies the technical delivery conditions in two test categories for welded tubes of circular cross-section made of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel which are intended for pressure and corrosion resisting purposes at room temperature, at low temperatures or elevated temperatures.

NOTE: Once the reference of this document is published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) under Directive 2014/68/EU, pressure equipment directive, the presumption of conformity to the Essential Safety Requirements (ESR) of Directive 2014/68/EU is limited to technical data of materials in this document and does not presume adequacy of the material to a specific item of equipment. Consequently, the assessment of the technical data stated in this material standard against the design requirements of this specific item of equipment to verify that the ESRs of the Pressure Equipment Directive are satisfied needs to be done by the designer of the pressure equipment, taking also into account the subsequent manufacturing processes which could affect properties of the base materials.

Who is BS EN 102177 for?

BS EN 102177 on technical delivery conditions for stainless steel tubes used under pressure is useful for various applications in industries such as automotive, food and beverage, home appliances, and pharmaceuticals, amongst other. Specific users include but are not limited to:

  • Manufacturers of welded stainless steel tubes
  • Manufacturers of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel
  • Fabricators
  • Welders
  • Engineers

Why should you use BS EN 102177 ?

Steel tubes and pipes can be used for a whole range of applications from building services to critical requirements involving gas or chemicals.

BS EN 102177 provides information on the tube manufacturing process, material selection, forming operation and weld condition, delivery conditions, chemical composition and mechanical properties of steel tubes which helps the user to test and select the right material to manufacture steel tubes and pipes and end-products.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection methods are given in BS EN 102177 which helps the user to test and analyse the properties of a material, component, structure or welding defects and discontinuities without causing damage.

As the buyer of BS EN 10217-7, the technical delivery conditions specified will help you choosing the right material for your product i.e. durable, strong, stainless steel tube that resists corrosion and heat. This will help in the construction of high-quality products, equipment and structures that are resistant to harsh environments, reduce maintenance hassles and have long service-life.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 102177:2021 supersedes BS EN 102177:2014, which is withdrawn.

Technical changes include updated tables and figures. These include:
