What is ISO 14189 – Water quality about?

ISO 14189 is an international standard that focuses on the enumeration of clostridium perfringens.  Water quality has a significant impact on water supply and oftentimes determines supply options. ISO 14189 specifies a method for the enumeration of vegetative cells and spores of Clostridium perfringens by the membrane filtration method in samples of water intended for human consumption. ISO 14189 can be applied to all types of water samples provided they do not contain particulate or colloidal matter that interferes with filtration.

Who is ISO 14189 – Water quality for?

ISO 14189 on the enumeration of clostridium perfringens is useful for:

  • Water supplier
  • Local health department
  • Environmental compliance inspector

Why should you use ISO 14189 –Water quality

Water quality refers to the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water based on the standards of its usage. It is most frequently used by reference to a set of standards against which compliance, generally achieved through treatment of the water, can be assessed. The main principle was to fit data to a linear model (additive effect of the error, without interaction). The counts are transformed into a lg scale to comply with the Normality pre-requisites of ANOVA. The Grubbs test is used to detect outliers (suspicious results for one laboratory - n°6). No result is discarded.

ISO 14189 is widely recognized as a valuable indicator for faecal pollution. Within the intestinal tract of animals and man, these Gram-positive bacteria form spores that are resistant to heating compared with vegetative cells. Using ISO 14189 you can specify a method for the enumeration of vegetative cells and spores of Clostridium perfringens by the membrane filtration method in samples of water intended for human consumption.
