What is BS EN 12645 about?

The BS EN 1264 series gives guidelines for surface embedded heating and cooling systems installed in buildings, residential and non-residential (e.g. office, public, commercial and industrial buildings) and focuses on systems installed for the purpose of thermal comfort.

The BS EN 1264 series gives guidelines for water-based heating and cooling systems embedded into the enclosure surfaces of the room to be heated or to be cooled. It also specifies the use of other heating media instead of water, as appropriate.

The BS EN 1264 series specifies standardized product characteristics by calculating and testing the thermal output of heating for technical specifications and certification. For the design, construction and operation of these systems, see BS EN 12643 and BS EN 12644 for the types A, B, C, D, H, I and J. For the types E, F and G, see the EN ISO 11855 series.

The systems specified in the BS EN 1264 series are adjoined to the structural base of the enclosure surfaces of the building, mounted directly or with fixing supports.

Note1: The BS EN 1264 series does not specify ceiling systems mounted in a suspended ceiling with a designed open-air gap between the system and the building structure which allows the thermally induced circulation of the air. The thermal output of these systems can be determined according to the EN 14037 series and EN 14240.

BS EN 12645 specifies the recalculation of values determined in BS EN 12642 for the system in question. It enables the conversion of the calculation and measurement results of BS EN 12642 into results for other surface orientations in the room, i.e. for ceiling and wall heating, as well as for the application as cooling surfaces, i.e. for the floor, ceiling and wall cooling.

Note2: The test results of BS EN 12642 are the basis of all calculations, whether or not the system in question is used for heating or cooling application.

Who is BS EN 12645 for?

BS EN 12645 on water-based heating and cooling systems is applicable to:

  • Commercial HVAC manufacturers
  • Underfloor Heating System Manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of components used in heating and cooling systems
  • Builders / Architects

Why should you use BS EN 12645?

The outputs of heating and cooling systems need to be quantified in order to be regulated. BS EN 12645 guides you with calculations and conversion values for this quantification. BS EN 12645 takes the values that you achieved using BS EN 12642, and helps you allocate those values in the formula for the gradient of the characteristic curve.

BS EN 12645 helps you to determine the thermal output of water-based heating and cooling systems on walls, ceilings and floors.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12645:2021 supersedes BS EN 12645:2008, which is withdrawn. BS EN 12645:2021 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to BS EN 12645:2008. These include:

  • Modification of the Title
  • Clarification of the Scope
  • Improved wording, especially the term prove method
