What is BS EN 12050-2 - Lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater about?

BS EN 12050 is a European Standard that discusses wastewater lifting plants for buildings and sites. The aim of the BS EN 12050 series is to provide best industry practices for the optimal functioning of lifting stations, such that wastewater can be pumped from a lower to higher elevation and sewage collection and disposal is carried out effectively.

BS EN 12050-2 is the second part of the series that applies to lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater for drainage of locations below flood level in buildings and sites to prevent any backflow of wastewater into the building. These lifting plants may be prefabricated or delivered as prefabricated kits and assembled on site.

BS EN 12050-2 applies also to lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater which are not prefabricated but composed of individual components purchased from different suppliers and put together on site.

Note: BS EN 12050-2 does not apply for pumping installations for drain and sewer systems outside buildings for pumping of municipal wastewater according to EN 752:2008

Who is BS EN 12050-2 - Lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater for?

BS EN 12050-2 on lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater is relevant to:

  • Companies involved with professional drainage, cleaning and the controlled discharge or reuse of water
  • Manufacturers, designer and installers of lifting plants
  • Quality testing teams
  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • FMCG, water distillation and chemical factories
  • Building project planners and management authorities
  • Site planning personnel
  • Local authorities

Why should you use BS EN 12050-2 - Lifting plants for faecal-free wastewater ?

Wastewater leaving homes, buildings and industrial sites generally flow by natural gravity. However, bathrooms and toilets that are located below flood level, need lifting stations to pump wastewater from a lower to higher elevation, to ensure the grey and black water can flow into sewers, for safe and hygienic disposal. Moreover, these lifting plants also play an integral role in moving sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. Hence, it is necessary that these lifting plants offer adequate performance.

In this regard, BS EN 12050-2 specifies the general requirements, basic construction and testing principles, together with information on materials and assessment and verification of constancy of performance, for faecal-free lifting plants.

Complying with materials and product characteristics that meet BS EN 12050-2 requirements can ensure that the lifting plants are safe and reliable to use.

With BS EN 12050-2 you can also test for hydraulic performance, tightness, and lifting effectiveness, and verify whether your products are fit for purpose.

As a result, BS EN 12050-2 ensures your lifting plants play a positive role in the performance of sewage collection and disposal systems. This can ultimately reduce excavation costs associated with digging for sewer pipes.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12050-2:2015 supersedes BS EN 12050-2:2001. BS EN 12050-2:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 12050-2:2001. These include:

  • Reaction to fire added
  • Hot water test added
  • Paragraph title “Evaluation of conformity” changed to “Assessment and verification of constancy of performance – AVCP” and updated in accordance with “Implementation of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) in harmonized standards”
  • Annex ZA updated in accordance with “Implementation of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) in harmonized standards” (adoption of the Regulation EU No. 305/2011)
  • Editorially revised
