What is BS EN 266 about?
BS EN 266 covers specifications for textile wall coverings. BS EN 266 applies to textile wallcoverings supplied in rolls for hanging on walls and ceilings by means of an adhesive. This adhesive goes across the whole interface between the wallcovering and the support surface. Various grades of colour fastness to light of textile wallcoverings are permitted and symbols to indicate these grades are given in BS EN 266.
Note 1: Excluded from BS EN 266 are rigid materials, materials not attached or not wholly attached by adhesive, and non-decorative wallcoverings such as wall linings or those with special properties, e.g., thermal, or acoustic insulation.

Why should you use BS EN 266?
A textile wallcovering is expected to have adequate strength such that it can be hung satisfactorily in accordance with the instructions given by the supplier and using the recommended adhesive. BS EN 266 guides you with the specified requirements for dimensions, adhesion of yarns and grades of colorfastness to light.
BS EN 266 gives the symbols to be used for marking purposes, for some of these characteristics and for matching, methods of application and removal. BS EN 266 provides the specified requirements for marking. BS EN 266 also gives a designation system for textile wall coverings.
The marking requirements of BS EN 266 are primarily for the information of the consumer and to enable optimum use of the product.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 266:2020 supersedes BS EN 266:1992, which is withdrawn. BS EN 266:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 266:1992. These include:
- Update of normative references
- Modifications to Clause 4 Dimensions and update of the references in Clause 5
- The references to Table 1 and the latter have been replaced by a global reference to the table of EN 235 in Clauses 7 Colour fastness to light and 8 Matching, application, removal and miscellaneous symbols
- Consistency of Clause 9 Marking has been improved
- Deletion of the former Annex B Method of measuring dimensions, while this is now referred to in EN 12956:1999
