What is BS EN 16445 Aerodynamic testing and rating of ATD about?

Air diffusion by terminal airflow devices is a type of air handling system that is generally used in conjunction with air volume flow systems, for efficient airflow in the occupied space.

BS EN 16445 is a European Standard that discusses air diffusion by air terminal devices for building ventilation.

The main objective of BS EN 16445 is to provide the best industry testing methods ensure air terminal devices plays a positive role in the operational efficiency and performance of ventilation systems in buildings.

BS EN 16445 specifies methods for the laboratory aerodynamic testing and rating of air terminal devices for mixed flow applications, including the specification of suitable test facilities and measurement techniques. BS EN 16445 applies to laboratory testing of ATD for technical characterisation.

BS EN 16445 gives only tests for the assessment of characteristics of the air terminal devices for mixed low applications, under non-isothermal conditions with a cold jet.

BS EN 16445 applies to ventilation or air conditioning systems designed for the maintenance of comfort conditions for buildings.

The principles described in this European Standard can also be used on site or in a lab for full-scale measurements.

Note 1: BS EN 16445 does not cover the testing of isothermal or low velocity terminal devices which are covered by other published standards.

Note 2: BS EN 16445 is not applicable in the case of systems for the control of industrial or other special process environments.

Who is BS EN 16445 - Aerodynamic testing and rating of ATD for?

BS EN 16445 on aerodynamic testing and rating of cold jet is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Manufacturers of air terminal devices
  • Quality control and testing personnel
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Product designers
  • Testing laboratories
  • Building designers and architects

Why should you use BS EN 16445 - Aerodynamic testing and rating of ATD?

Aerodynamic performance of ventilation units needs to be assessed in order to maintain steady conversion of energy and efficient airflow through ducts. In this regard, BS EN 16445 provides the best industry requirements for instrumentation, test conditions and ATD isothermal characteristics.

BS EN 16445 also provides guidance on test to measure the non isothermal air discharge characteristics of a supply ATD and covers measurement of air flow rate, temperature, and velocity to demonstrate whether your devices are fit for purpose.

Reference standard to determine the ATD isothermal characteristics such as pressure drop, rise, drop, throw and spread, is covered.

As a result, if you are a manufacturer of ATD used for building ventilation, by adopting BS EN 16445 test methods can determine whether your products are efficient and effective for use.
