What is ISO 1609 about?  

ISO 1609 discusses vacuum technology. Vacuum technology is a method used to evacuate air from a closed volume by creating a pressure differential from the closed volume to some vent, the ultimate vent being the open atmosphere.  ISO 1609 specifies the dimensions of non-knife-edge flanges and collars used in vacuum technology. The dimensions ensure interchangeability between bolted, clamped, and rotatable flanges: 

  • Whether the assembly is homogeneous (for example, bolted flanges or clamped flanges) or heterogeneous (for example, bolted flanges assembled with clamped flanges either by means of bolts or clamps or by means of bolts and rotatable flanges). 
  • Whether the sealing rings used with the flanges be elastomer O-rings or metal sealing rings if they are compatible with the linear sealing loads given in Annex A.

Why should you use ISO 1609 

Vacuum technology is the most encountered method for the production, containment, and measurement of sub-atmospheric pressure. ISO 1609 discusses the non-knife-edge flanges and collars used in vacuum technology.  

Non-knife edge flanges are used for scientific and industrial applications to allow various pieces of equipment to interact via physical connections and for vacuum maintenance, monitoring, and manipulation from outside a vacuum's chamber.

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS ISO 1609:2020 supersedes BS ISO 1609:1986. BS ISO 1609:2020 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to BS ISO 1609:1986. These include: 

  • The title has been updated 
  • The normative reference has been updated 
  • “40” in 4.1.1 has been corrected to “50”
