What is BS EN 13445‑1 about?
BS EN 13445‑1 is the first in an eight-part series of European standards, which specifies requirements for the design, construction, inspection, and testing of unfired pressure vessels covered by EN 13445-1:2021 and constructed of steels in accordance with EN 13445-2:2021.
BS EN 13445‑1 is applicable to unfired pressure vessels with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0,5 bar gauge but may be used for vessels operating at lower pressures, including vacuum.
BS EN 13445‑1 is applied to the following pressure vessels if an account is taken of additional and/or alternative requirements resulting from the hazard analysis and from rules or instructions specific for:
- Transportable vessels
- Items specifically designed for nuclear use
- Pressure vessels with a risk of overheating
Note: BS EN 13445‑1 is not applicable to pressure vessels of the following types:
- Vessels of riveted construction
- Vessels of lamellar cast iron or any other materials not included in Parts 2, 6, or 8 of the standards
- Multi-layered, autofrettage or pre-stressed vessels
Who is BS EN 13445‑1 for?
BS EN 13445‑1 on unfired pressure vessels is useful for organizations that commission, design, build and maintain pressure vessels, mainly in:
- Oil and gas
- Petrochemicals
- Process plant
- Energy generation (including nuclear)
- Food and drink
Users:
- Mechanical engineers
- Pressure vessels designers and manufacturers
- Inspectors and inspection bodies (notified bodies/approved bodies)
Why should you use BS EN 13445‑1?
If pressure vessels are expected to do their jobs successfully, they need to adhere to the highest quality standards. This keeps their contents intact and ensures the safety of those around.
As the first document in the series, BS EN 13445‑1 defines the terms, quantities, symbols, and units that are used throughout the EN 13445 series. BS EN 13445‑1 gives you general information on the design and manufacturing of unfired pressure vessels.
BS EN 13445‑1 also contains instructions on how to use the standard. In addition, BS EN 13445‑1 contains an index that covers the whole standard. So this is your base reference document for the entire series.
Using the BS EN 13445 series ensures that the users of the pressure vessels are able to use vessels that are designed to remove or reduce risks. If removal of a certain hazard is not feasible, the vessel is designed and equipped to protect against the respective risk
