What is BS EN 13445‑8 about?
BS EN 13445‑8 is the eighth part of a multi-series document on unfired pressure vessels, that specifies requirements for unfired pressure vessels and their parts made of aluminium and aluminium alloys, in addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels.
BS EN 13445‑8 specifies unfired pressure vessels for loads up to 500 full cycles. The type of inspection specified in BS EN 13445‑8 includes a declaration of compliance to the material specification.
Note: Cast materials are not included in BS EN 13445-8.
Who is BS EN 13445‑8 for?
BS EN 13445‑8 on unfired pressure vessels is useful for organizations that commission, design, build and maintain pressure vessels, mainly in:
- Oil and gas
- Petrochemicals
- Process plant
- Energy generation (including nuclear)
- Food and drink
Users
- Mechanical engineers
- Pressure vessels designers and manufacturers
- Inspectors and inspection bodies (notified bodies/approved bodies)
Why should you use BS EN 13445‑8?
If pressure vessels are expected to do their jobs successfully, they need to adhere to the highest quality standards. This keeps their contents intact and ensures the safety of those around them. Following BS EN 13445‑8 provides you with all the requirements and design properties to design pressure vessels and their parts using aluminium and aluminium alloy materials. It creates a standardized approach for manufacturers.
The guidelines provided in BS EN 13445‑8 consider factors such as welding procedure specifications, production test, heat treatment, inspection and testing, non-destructive testing of welded joints.
Besides design and construction, BS EN 13445‑8 also offers guidelines to inspect and test in-service vessels, subject to appropriate adjustment.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 13445‑8:2021 supersedes BS EN 13445‑8:2014+A1:2014. BS EN 13445‑8:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13445‑8:2014+A1:2014. These include:
- The additions relate to flat ends
- Design by experiment
- Port-hole extruded tubes
- The allowable design strength values
