What is ISO 788 about?
ISO 788 discusses ultramarine pigments. Synthetic ultramarine is a pure, deep blue, fine particle. Ultramarine pigments are dynamic synthetic pigments with a wide variety of applications ranging from fabric whiteners to wall paints.
ISO 788 specifies the requirements and corresponding test methods for artificial ultramarine pigments in plastics, paints, rubbers, etc. Ultramarine Blue is not only used to provide a reddish blue shade or to whiten polymers, but also to provide a blue undertone to grey and black plastic parts.

What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 788:2021 cancels and replaces ISO 788:1974. BS ISO 788:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 788:1974. These include:
- The title of the standard has been changed from “Ultramarine pigments for paints” to “Ultramarine pigments”
- The test method of free sulphur has been changed to the iodometric method
- The requirements for free sulphur, water-soluble matter and sieve residue are stricter
- The limitation of the contents of elements and the test methods have been added
- The requirements and test methods for resistance to light and resistance to bleeding have been added
