What is BS EN 12245 - Wrapped composite cylinders about?  

BS EN 12245 is a technical specification that specifies minimum requirements for the materials, design, construction, prototype testing and routine manufacturing inspections of composite gas cylinders for compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases. BS EN 12245 is applicable to cylinders that comprise a liner of metallic material (welded or seamless) or non-metallic material (or a mixture thereof), reinforced by a wound composite consisting of fibers of glass, carbon or aramid (or a mixture thereof) embedded in a matrix. 

BS EN 12245 is also applicable to composite cylinders without liners. BS EN 12245 is not applicable to gas cylinders which are partially covered with fibers and commonly called "hoop wrapped" cylinders. For hoop wrapped composite cylinders, see EN 12257. BS EN 12245 is primarily for industrial gases other than LPG but may also be applied to LPG. 

Note 1: For the purposes of BS EN 12245, the word “cylinder” includes tubes (seamless transportable pressure receptacles of a water capacity exceeding 150 liters and of not more than 3 000 liters). 

Note 2: BS EN 12245 does not address the design, fitting and performance of removable protective sleeves. Where these are fitted, they should be considered separately.

Why should you use BS EN 12245 - Wrapped composite cylinders 

The purpose of BS EN 12245 is to provide a specification for the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of refillable, transportable fully wrapped composite cylinders. The specifications given are based on knowledge of, and experience with, materials, design requirements, manufacturing processes and control during the manufacture of cylinders in common use in the countries of the CEN members. 

Composite cooking gas cylinders are clear and safer than traditional steel cylinders, which are hefty and prone to explosion. Because these fiberglass cylinders do not explode even if there is a gas leak or a fire, they do not explode. The composite cylinders must be used to store compressed air for breathing apparatus used in rescue, firefighting, and other similar situations.
