What is BS EN 8472 Safety of milling tools about?

BS EN 8472 is the second part of the EN 847 multi-series that discusses safety requirements for woodworking tools.

BS EN 8472 specifies the determination of the maximum speed for given eccentricity at clamping devices for the shank strength of milling tools with cylindrical and taper shank. BS EN 8472 also specifies the marking of the tool. Bore mounted tools e.g., milling tools, circular saw blades which are mounted on an arbour should be considered as a shank-mounted tool.

BS EN 8472 complements BS EN 847-1 and applies also for shank tools with a cutting diameter of less than 16 mm.

Note: BS EN 8472 is not applicable for shanks of tools according to this scope, which are manufactured before the date of its publication.

Who is BS EN 8472 Safety of milling tools for?

BS EN 8472 on safety requirements for the shank of shank-mounted milling tools is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of woodworking tools
  • Designers of woodworking tools
  • Suppliers and importers of woodworking tools

Why should you use BS EN 8472 Safety of milling tools

Cylindrical shank on milling machines is an important component of the machine as it functions as the holder for the endmill. If the shank fails due to some reason, then it could compromise the milling tool’s integrity and thereby increase the possibility of hazards.

BS EN 8472 identifies the potential hazards and the conditions that can cause them. BS EN 8472 provides you guidance to eliminate the possibility of these hazards.

Overall, the guidelines of BS EN 8472 enable you to design shank-mounted milling tools that meet the minimum safety requirements and thereby ensure the operators safety.
