What is BS EN 847-3 – Safety requirements for clamping devices about?
BS EN 847-3 focuses on tools for woodworking. BS EN 847-3 is the third part of the BS EN 847 series of standards that specifies all hazards arising from the use of clamping devices for the fastening of milling tools and circular saw blades on woodworking machines and specifies the methods for the elimination or reduction of these hazards by the design of the clamping device and by the provision of information.
Note1: BS EN 847-3 does not apply to arbors for spindle moulding machines in accordance with BS EN 848-1 or to clamping flanges for circular sawing blades to be used on circular sawing machines in accordance with the standard series BS EN 1870 and does not cover hazard related to the connection of the clamping device with the machine.
Note2: Bore mounted tools which are mounted on an interchangeable arbor should be considered as a shank mounted tool.
Who is BS EN 847-3 - Safety requirements for clamping devices for?
BS EN 847-3 on clamping devices is useful for:
- Clamping devices manufacturers
- Quality control department
- Safety department
Why should you use BS EN 847-3 - Safety requirements for clamping devices?
The purpose of the clamping device is to prevent the work piece from shifting or being pulled from the jig/ fixture during machining. It is necessary to understand the working of the clamping device which prevents injury to the operator. BS EN 847-3 covers the causes of the hazard related to the clamping device that can be taken care of while operating with the clamping device.
BS EN 847-3 also provides design requirements and minimum balance quality requirements that can be followed while manufacturing of the clamping device. This ensures that the clamping devices shall be designed and made of such materials that they withstand the forces and loads expected during operation. BS EN 847-3 provides a test that determines the tolerance of the clamping device. BS EN 847-3 can help to ensure that the clamping device holds the workpiece rigidly while machining and does not damage the workpiece while holding them.
