What is ISO 22389-2 about?

ISO 22389 is an International Standard that discusses timber structures. ISO 22389-2 is the second part of a multi-part series that specifies requirements for manufacturing in-house quality assurance and periodic re-evaluation of prefabricated wood-based I-beams.

ISO 22389-2 specifies the component performance and manufacturing requirements for prefabricated wood-based I-beams that are used as structural members in bending applications.

Note 1: Fire performance, formaldehyde requirements, and biological durability are not covered under ISO 22389-2.

Note 2: Under ISO 22389-2, safety concerns that are associated with its use are not covered.

Note 3: Under ISO 22389-2, wood-based I-beams that are tested should be used in covered conditions and should utilize components that can resist the effects of moisture on structural performance but should not be permanently exposed to the weather.

Who is ISO 22389-2 for?

ISO 22389-2 on requirements of timber structures is relevant to:

  • I-beams manufacturers and suppliers
  • I-beam's distributors
  • Steel industry
  • Civil engineers
  • Contractors

Why should you use ISO 22389-2

An I-beam is a composite structural member that is extensively used in residential floor and roof framing. These prefabricated wood-based I-beams are manufactured in many different countries under different national standards and are exported from one country to another. While the national standards have many similarities there are also many areas of dissimilarity between them. For that, there is a need for the development of an International Standard to bring consistency and to ensure the suitability of prefabricated wood-based I-beams regardless of the country of manufacture.

Manufacturing requirements under ISO 22389-2 provide guidance while manufacturing I-beams of high quality and ensure quality assurance to its users.

ISO 22389-2 evaluates the performance of components in I-beams to accordingly increase its overall performance through parameters such as unidirectional bending, ability to carry loads, minimal deflection and vibration, and resistance to shear stresses.

ISO 22389-2 provides consistency and suitability in the export and import of I-beams regardless of the country of manufacture or use.

By adopting requirements under ISO 22389-2, you can standardise the manufacturing process of I-beams that can enhance global acceptance for your products, and thus allow entry to newer markets.
