What is BS EN 60691  Requirements for thermal links about ?

BS EN 60691 is an international standard that covers guidelines for thermal links.

BS EN 60691 is applicable to thermal links intended for incorporation in electrical appliances, electronic equipment, and component parts thereof, normally intended for use indoors, in order to protect them against excessive temperatures under abnormal conditions.

BS EN 60691 is applicable to thermal-link packaged assemblies where the thermal-link(s) has already been approved to this standard but packaged in a metallic or non-metallic housing and provided with terminals/wiring leads.

BS EN 60691 is applicable to the thermal links with a rated voltage not exceeding 690 V AC or DC and a rated current not exceeding 63A.

Note 1: BS EN 60691 is not applicable to thermal links used under extreme conditions such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres.

Note 2: BS EN 60691 is not applicable to thermal-links to be used in circuits on AC with a frequency lower than 45 Hz or higher than 62 Hz.

Who is BS EN 60691  Requirements for thermal links for ?

BS EN 60691 on requirements for thermal links is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of thermal equipment and links
  • Dealers and distributors of thermal equipment and links
  • Designers of thermal equipment and links
  • Test/ service providers for thermal equipment and links

Why should you use BS EN 60691  Requirements for thermal links ?

Thermal-links are defined as non-resettable devices that function once only without re-functioning. They are widely applied for the thermal protection of equipment in which one or more parts may reach hazardous temperatures, under fault (abnormal) conditions.

BS EN 60691 lays down a number of basic requirements for thermal links that can be applied to various thermal equipment, to provide you with a high degree of protection. It helps you know the ignition resistance of the materials which are intended to use in the production of electrotechnical products.

BS EN 60691 provides you with the specifications that are necessary to establish uniform requirements for thermal links so that consistency is maintained throughout all the users. It defines test methods for you as well as provides you with useful information for the application of thermal links in the thermal equipment.

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS EN 60691:2016 supersedes BS EN 60691:2003+A2:2010, which is withdrawn. BS EN 60691:2016 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • Requirements for thermal-link packaged assemblies
  • Renew the requirements and definitions for Th-test
  • Change starting temperature for interrupt current test
  • Clarify requirements for marking (packing label)
  • Minimum Proof Tracking Index 175 instead 120
