What is BS EN 14316-2 - Specification for the installed EP products about?

The quality and performance of thermal insulation products are critical when it comes to achieving operational energy efficiency in buildings, as they can effectively minimize heat loss and heat gain, as per the external weather conditions.

BS EN 14316 is a European Standard on thermal insulation products for buildings. The main aim of the BS EN 14316 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products, such that they are fit for the intended use.

BS EN 14316-2 is the second part of the series that specifies the requirements covering the four product types of expanded perlite products Perlite Aggregate (EPA), Coated Perlite (EPC), Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH) and Premixed Perlite (EPM), containing less than 1 % organic material as defined by Annex D of EN 14316-1:2004 for in-situ insulation of roofs, ceilings, walls and floors.

Note 1: BS EN 14316-2 does not specify the required level of all properties to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The required levels are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.

Note 2: BS EN 14316-2 does not include factory made insulation products of formed shapes and boards made with expanded perlite or in-situ products intended to be used for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations.

Note 3: BS EN 14316-2 does not specify performance requirements for airborne sound insulation and for acoustic absorption applications.

Who is BS EN 14316-2 - Specification for the installed EP products for?

BS EN 14316-2 on the specification for the installed EP products is useful for:

  • Thermal and sound insulating material manufacturers
  • EP products manufacturers
  • Contractors
  • Civil engineers
  • Consultancies for thermal insulation
  • Specifiers and installers
  • Quality control and testing personnel

Why should you use BS EN 14316-2 - Specification for the installed EP products

EP is a lightweight granular (insulation) material manufactured from naturally occurring volcanic rock expanded by heat to form a cellular structure. The high thermal resistance of EP insulation makes it an excellent option for those looking to improve energy efficiency ratings in a home or building.

In this regard, BS EN 14316-2 provides guidelines for installing insulation products as well as the in-situ measurement of the insulation thickness, cavity width and cavity fill.

BS EN 14316-2 also specifies the checks and tests to be used for the declarations made by the installer of the product.

Thus, if you are a manufacturer of EV products for thermal insulation, complying with BS EN 14316-2 can help demonstrate the performance and reliability of your product, ensuring that they are fit for purpose.
