What is BS EN 13168 - Factory made wood wool (WW) products about ?

BS EN 13168 is the European standard on thermal insulation products that consistently offer the intended resistance to heat flow throughout the building's lifetime.

BS EN 13168 specifies the requirements for factory-made wood wool (WW) products, with or without facings or coatings, which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings. The products are manufactured in the form of boards or slabs.

BS EN 13168 also specifies the requirements for the factory-made composite products, made from wood wool in combination with other insulation materials.

BS EN 13168 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling.

Products covered by BS EN 13168 are also used in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels.

Note 1: BS EN 13168 does not specify the required level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The levels and classes required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.

Note 2: Products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,15 m2⋅K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,100 W/(m⋅K) at 10 °C are not covered by BS EN 13168

Note 3: BS EN 13168 does not cover in situ insulation products and products intended to be used for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations.

Who is BS EN 13168 - Factory made wood wool (WW) products for ?

BS EN 13168 on thermal insulation products for buildings is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of thermal insulating products
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of thermoplastic polymers
  • Wool manufacturers

Why should you use BS EN 13168 - Factory made wood wool (WW) products

Wood Wool insulation is a natural product that combines fire resistance with superior acoustic and thermal performance.

BS EN 13168 provides the properties of thermal insulation products to measure thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.

The classes of dimensional tolerances are specified in BS EN 13168 giving measures of length and width, thickness, squareness and flatness.

BS EN 13168 navigates you through the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of the factory-made wood wool (WW) products.

The designation code for factory-made wood wool (WW) products is illustrated in BS EN 13168.

Sampling, conditioning and dimensions of test specimens are determined by BS EN 13168 for the determination of thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.

BS EN 13168 provides the Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) with the compliance of the product with the requirements and the performance determination of product type by type testing and factory production control.

Marking, labelling and packaging of the wood wool (WW) products for the insulation of buildings are set out in BS EN 13168.

Moreover, BS EN 13168 leads you through the manufacturing of wood wool (WW) products that have a high heat storage capacity, is vapour permeable and has good sound insulating properties as well as is moisture-proof and mould resistant.

As a result, you can utilise wool wool products which are eco-friendly resources and is natural binding agents with fast, easy and effective installation.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13168:2012+A1:2015 supersedes BS EN 13168:2012. BS EN 13168:2012+A1:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13168:2012. These include:

  • Better harmonisation between the individual standards of the package (EN 13162 to EN 13171) on definitions, requirements, classes and levels
  • New normative annex on multi-layered products
  • Changes on some editorial and technical content and addition of information on some specific items such as for MW: lamella, compressibility, etc
  • Addition of links to EN 15715, Thermal insulation products — Instruction for mounting and fixing for reaction to fire testing — Factory made products
  • Changes of Annex ZA.
