What is BS EN 13166 - Factory made phenolic foam (PF) products about?  

BS EN 13166 is the European standard for thermal insulation products that consistently offer the intended resistance to heat flow throughout the building's lifetime. 

BS EN 13166 specifies the requirements for factory-made phenolic foam products, with or without facings or coatings, which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings. The products are manufactured in the form of boards and laminates. 

Products covered by BS EN 13166 are also used in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels. 

BS EN 13166 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling. 

Note 1: BS EN 13166 does not specify the required level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The levels required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards. 

Note 2: Products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,40 m2⋅K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,050 W/(m⋅K) at 10 °C is not covered by BS EN 13166. 

Note 3: BS EN 13166 does not cover in-situ thermal insulation products, products intended to be used for the thermal insulation of building equipment and industrial installations.

Phenolic foam is a rigid cellular foam, the polymer structure of which is made primarily from the polycondensation of phenol, its homologues and/or derivatives, with or without aldehydes or ketones. 

BS EN 13166 provides the properties of thermal insulation products to measure thermal resistance and thermal conductivity. 

The classes of dimensional tolerances are specified in BS EN 13166 giving measures of length and width, thickness, squareness and flatness. 

BS EN 13166 navigates you through the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of factory-made phenolic foam (PF) products. 

Sampling, conditioning and dimensions of test specimens are determined by BS EN 13166 for the determination of thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.

As a result, the phenolic foam may be used in a variety of architectural applications, including roofing, cavity board, external wallboard, plasterboard dry lining systems, wall insulation, and floor insulation, providing improved fire performance and expanding the market. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 13166:2012+A2:2016 supersedes BS EN 13166:2012+A1:2015. BS EN 13166:2012+A2:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13166:2012+A1:2015. These include: 

  • Better harmonisation between the individual standards of the package (EN 13162 to EN 13171) on definitions, requirements, classes and levels 
  • New normative annex on multi-layered products 
  • Changes in some editorial and technical content. This includes the limiting of the use of the slicing method for ageing in Annex C to unfaced and open-faced products and the clearer definition of how the ageing techniques should be applied to various types of PF products 
  • Addition of links to EN 15715, Thermal insulation products — Instructions for mounting and fixing for reaction to fire testing — Factory made products 
  • Changes to the Annex ZA.
