What is BS EN 13162- Thermal insulation with factory made MW products about?

BS EN 13162 is a European Standard that discusses thermal insulation products for buildings. The main aim of the BS EN 13162 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products, such that they are fit for their intended use.

BS EN 13162 specifies the requirements for factory made mineral wool (MW) products, with or without facings or coatings, which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings. The products are manufactured in mat blankets, boards or slabs.

Products covered by BS EN 13162 are also used in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels; the performance of systems incorporating these products is not covered.

Note 1: BS EN 13162 does not specify the required level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The levels required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.

Note 2: Products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,25 m2K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,060 W/(mK) at 10 °C are not covered by BS EN 13162.

Note 3: BS EN 13162 does not cover in situ insulation products (covered by EN 14064 parts 1 and 2) and products intended to be used for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations (covered by EN 14303).

Who is BS EN 13162- Thermal insulation with factory made MW products for?

BS EN 13162 on thermal insulation products is relevant to:

  • Thermal and sound insulating material manufacturers
  • MW manufacturers and suppliers
  • Contractors
  • Civil engineers
  • Building owners/management
  • Specifiers and installers

Why should you use BS EN 13162- Thermal insulation with factory made MW products?

MW is a type of thermal insulation product or insulation wool manufactured from molten rock, slag or glass, that is widely used in buildings. The main purpose of MW is to prevent unwanted heat loss or heat gain from a building, thus keeping its occupants protected from external environment conditions. Besides, MW is also an excellent choice for reducing noise transfer between rooms.

In this regard, BS EN 13162 provides the best industry recommendations on product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling of MW products.

BS EN 13162 also covers guidance on Assessment and Verification of the Constancy of Performance (AVCP) that ensures your products conform with the requirements.

Thus, if you are a manufacturer of factory made MW products for thermal insulation, complying with BS EN 13162 can help demonstrate the performance and credibility of your product, ensuring that they are fit for purpose.

Ultimately, BS EN 13162 can ensure your products contribute to reducing energy demand and pose as an effective tool for lowering GHG emissions.
