What is BS EN 15599-2 – In-situ thermal insulation formed from EP products about?  

The quality and performance of thermal insulation products are critical when it comes to achieving operational energy efficiency in buildings, as they can effectively minimize heat loss and heat gain, as per the external weather conditions. 

BS EN 15599 is a European Standard on thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial installations. The main aim of the BS EN 15599 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products, such that they are fit for the intended use. 

BS EN 15599-2 is the second part of the BS EN 15599 series that specifies the requirement for expanded perlite (EP) products which are used for in-situ thermal insulation of building equipment and industrial installations with an operating temperature in the range of approximately – 270 ºC to + 650 ºC. 

BS EN 15599-2 specifies the requirements for the four types of expanded perlite products, Perlite 

Aggregate (EPA), Coated Perlite (EPC), Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH) and Premixed Perlite (EPM), containing less than 1 % by mass organic material. 

Note 1: BS EN 15599-2 does not specify the required level of all properties to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The required levels are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards. 

Note 2: BS EN 15599-2 does not include factory-made insulation products of formed shapes and boards made with expanded perlite. 

Note 3: The products covered by BS EN 15599-2 are not intended to be used primarily for airborne sound insulation or sound absorption applications although they may improve the performance of the installation in these respects when installed for their primary insulation intended use.
