What is BS EN 14319-1 - Specification for rigid PUR and PIR foam dispensed system about?

BS EN 14319 is a European Standard that discusses thermal insulation products for buildings. The main aim of the BS EN 14319 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products and systems, such that they are fit for its intended use.

BS EN 14319-1 is the first part of the BS EN 14319 series that specifies requirements for in-situ formed dispensed rigid polyurethane (PUR) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam products for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations, for example, industrial storage vessels, pipes and ducts used for the supply of fuels, oil, other liquids, hot and cold water, air and other gases.

Depending on the type of foam products complying with BS EN 14319-1, they may have service temperature ranges that lie within the limits of ± 200 °C.

BS EN 14319-1 is a specification for the rigid foam system before installation.

Note 1: BS EN 14319-1 does not specify the required levels of all properties to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular end-use application.

Note 2: BS EN 14319-1 does not cover factory made rigid polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam insulation products or in-situ products intended to be used for the insulation of buildings.

Note 3: BS EN 14319-1 does not specify performance requirements for direct airborne sound insulation and acoustic absorption applications.

Who is BS EN 14319-1 - Specification for rigid PUR and PIR foam dispensed system for?

BS EN 14319-1 on thermal insulation products is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of foam products for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations
  • Manufacturers of industrial storage vessels, pipes and ducts etc that require foam insulation
  • Thermal insulating material manufacturers
  • PUR and PIR manufacturers and suppliers
  • Quality control and testing personnel
  • Petrochemical industry
  • Oil and gas industry

Why should you use BS EN 14319-1 - Specification for rigid PUR and PIR foam dispensed system?

Foam products are either called flexible or rigid. The flexible products are used in upholstery and mattresses and are characterised by their ability to deflect, support and recover to their original thickness continually during their in-use phase. Those that are not flexible are termed rigid and do not possess these flexible characteristics. They are mostly used for thermal insulation purposes and vary widely in their compression strength values.

In this regard, BS EN 14319-1 provides the best industry recommendations on product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling of rigid PUR and PIR products.

Besides, guidance on the determination of substrate adhesion strength perpendicular to faces, Initial type testing (ITT) and Factory production control (FPC), determination of the aged values of thermal resistance and thermal conductivity and determination of the reaction profile and free-rise density and reference density is also covered.

Thus, if you are a manufacturer of PUR and PIR foam products for thermal insulation, complying with BS EN 14319-1 can help demonstrate the performance and credibility of your product, ensuring that they are fit for purpose.
