What is ISO 16535 – Thermal insulating products about?

ISO 16535 is an international standard on building applications that discusses the determination of long-term water absorption by immersion for thermal insulating products. Thermal insulating helps in slowing down the rate of heat loss from a hot surface and similarly reduce the rate of heat gain into a cold body.

ISO 16535 specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the long-term water absorption of test specimens. It is applicable to thermal insulating products. ISO 16535 specifies two methods: method 1: partial immersion and method 2: total immersion.

NOTE: The long-term water absorption by partial immersion is intended to simulate the water absorption caused by long-term water exposure.

NOTE: The long-term water absorption by total immersion is not directly related to the conditions on-site but has been recognized as a relevant condition of test for some products in some applications.

Who is ISO 16535 – Thermal insulating products for?

ISO 16535 on thermal insulating products is applicable to:

  • Manufacturer of thermally insulated products
  • Design engineers
  • Heating engineers

Why should you use ISO 16535 – Thermal insulating products?

Thermal insulation reduces the unwanted heat loss or heat gain through a building envelope. ISO 16535 in turn reduces the energy demand for cooling and heating of buildings, and this is a mitigation measure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

ISO 16535 guides you to conduct tests such as water absorption by immersion which gives an estimation of the total pore volume of the concrete. ISO 16535 navigates you through two different procedures i.e Partial immersion which is determined by measuring a change in mass of a test specimen, in which the lower part is in contact with water for 28 days. Total immersion is determined by measuring the change in mass of the test specimen, totally immersed in water, over 28 days.

With obedience and compliance to ISO 16535, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality products for building applications. In this manner, you can make sure that your products consistently meet and exceed quality expectations.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 16535:2019 supersedes BS EN 12087:2013, which is withdrawn. It includes:

  • The content in 5.3, 6.4, 7.1 and 10 has been revised to reflect the conditions for tropical countries.
