What is BS EN 1434-4 about?

BS EN 1434-4 is the fourth part of the multi-series European Standard that specifies the general requirements for thermal energy meters intended for measuring the energy which in a heat-exchange circuit is absorbed (cooling) or given up (heating) by a liquid called the heat-conveying liquid.

The thermal energy meter indicates the quantity of heat in legal units.

BS EN 1434-4 covers meters for closed systems only, where the differential pressure over the thermal load is limited.

Note 1: Electrical safety requirements are not covered by BS EN 1434-4.

Note 2: Pressure safety requirements are not covered by BS EN 1434-4.

Note 3: Surface-mounted temperature sensors are not covered by BS EN 1434-4.

Who is BS EN 1434-4 for?

BS EN 1434-4 on thermal energy meter is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of thermal energy meters
  • Electronics and Electrical engineers
  • Testing houses/ service/certification providers for thermal energy meter

Why should you use BS EN 1434-4?

Thermal energy meters are used to measure energy from hydronic-based heating and cooling systems.

BS EN 1434-4 specifies a procedure for testing the pattern with the metrological principles. The test procedure shall ascertain that the pattern complies with the metrological requirements of BS EN 1434-4.

BS EN 1434-4 provides test methods for pattern testing and pattern approval, as well as requirements for operational conditions tests, performance tests, and additional functionality for smart meters.

Overall, BS EN 1434-4 guides users to use a structured methodology and a systems approach to manufacture superior quality of thermal energy meters, thereby accelerating the uptake of new energy-saving technologies. Utilizing these tools can lead to greater energy efficiency and superior-quality products.
