What is ISO 5079 about?
BS EN ISO 5079 specifies the method and conditions of testing for the determination of the breaking force, and elongation at the break; when fibres are wet. It is applicable to all fibres, including crimped fibres, provided the length of the fibre available enables the gauge length specified.
Note: ISO 5079 is restricted to the use of the constant-rate-of-extension testing machine.

Why should you use ISO 5079?
Breaking strength is the ability of a material to withstand a pulling or tensile force. It is customarily measured in units of force per cross-sectional area. The change in length or width of the fabric at breaking force expressed as the term of percentage is called elongation.
BS EN ISO 5079 guides you through the process of determining the breaking force and elongation at break of individual fibres of textile fibres. These tests help you to understand how much bending and shaping the fibre can withstand without breaking.
These tests for textile fibre breaking force and elongation also help you to gauge the capacity of the fibres to resist cracking or breaking under tension. This, in turn, helps you to decide what product the fibre is best suited for.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 5079:2020 supersedes ISO 5079:1995, which has been withdrawn. BS EN ISO 5079:2020 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to ISO 5079:1995. These include:
- Addition of “ISO 3696”, “ISO 7500-1” and “ISO 10012” as normative references
- Adjustment of “ISO 3060” and “IWTO 32” from normative references to the bibliography
- Revision of the definitions of braking force, force at the rapture, extension, elongation at break, elongation at rupture, gauge length, initial length, pretension, and breaking density
- Deletion of terminological entry for “tension”
- Addition of a terminological entry for “constant-rate-of-extension testing machine
