What is BS EN 60332-1-2Vertical flame propagation test about?

BS EN 60332-1-2 is an international standard that focuses on the tests for electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions.

BS EN 60332-1-2 specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical fibre cable, under fire conditions.

BS EN 60332-1-2 specifies the use of a 1 kW pre-mixed flame is for general use but makes an exception that the procedure specified may not be suitable for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0.5 mm² total cross-section. It is because the conductor melts before the test is completed, or for the testing of small optical fibre cables, as the cable is broken before the test is completed.

Who is BS EN 60332-1-2Vertical flame propagation test for?

BS EN 60332-1-2 on vertical flame propagation test is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of electric and optical fibre cables
  • Dealers and distributors of electric and optical fibre cables
  • Designers of electric and optical fibre cables
  • Test/ service providers for electric and optical fibre cables

Why should you use BS EN 60332-1-2Vertical flame propagation test?

The flame propagation test is performed to check the flammability and flame propagation characteristics of electric and optical fibre cables when exposed to fire conditions.

BS EN 60332-1-2 lays down the technicalities for a vertical flame propagation test, where the cables are positioned vertically above a controlled flame for a fixed time. It helps you ensure the flammability of electric and optical fibre cables, to provide a high degree of protection.

BS EN 60332-1-2 gives the procedure for the test methods for you such as sampling, conditioning, positioning of test pieces, as well as the flame application which helps you verify the flammability and hence the reliability, high efficiency, and durability of the electric and optical fibre cables.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60332-1-2:2004+A11:2016 supersedes BS EN 60332-1-2:2004+A1:2015, which is withdrawn.
