What is BS EN 1097-9 - Resistance of coarse aggregate by abrasion from studded tyres about?
BS EN 1097 is a European Standard on tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates. The main aim of the BS EN 1097 series is to provide the best industry guidance to ensure construction materials contribute to the structural integrity of civil engineering works.
BS EN 1097-9 is the ninth part of the BS EN 1097 series that describes the reference method, used for type testing and in case of dispute, for determination of the resistance of coarse aggregate to wear by abrasion from studded tyres.
For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used, provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established.
The test is applicable to aggregates with a size fraction of 11,2 mm to 16 mm.
Who is BS EN 1097-9 - Resistance of coarse aggregate by abrasion from studded tyres for?
BS EN 1097-9 on the determination of the resistance of coarse aggregate is useful for:
- Construction materials manufacturers and suppliers
- Manufacturers of bituminous binder and aggregates
- Mineral materials and products manufacturers
- Construction industry
- Civil engineers
- Contractors
- Cement production companies
- Quality control and testing authorities
Why should you use BS EN 1097-9 - Resistance of coarse aggregate by abrasion from studded tyres?
Nordic test is a testing method of coarse aggregate that shows a good correlation to the road abrasion wear under studded tyres loading. Road wear caused by studded tyres has been the dominant mechanism of distress and the cause of rut development on high traffic Nordic roads.
In this regard, BS EN 1097-9 provides the requirements for apparatus, reagents, test preparation and test procedure to evaluate the resistance of coarse aggregate.
As a result, if you are a manufacturer of aggregates, testing in compliance with BS EN 1097-9 can demonstrate the performance and quality of your products.
By determining the resistance of coarse aggregate, you can ultimately assess whether your construction materials are fit for use. Moreover, this assessment can also play a significant role in improving the design mix for optimal concrete performance.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1097-9:2014 supersedes EN 1097-9:1998. BS EN 1097-9:2014 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 1097-9:1998. These include:
- Scope: rewritten to allow the use of other methods under precise conditions
- Apparatus: Possibility to use other suitable equipment for drying aggregates than the prescribed ventilated oven. Steel quality has been updated
- Preparation of test specimens rewritten (Mass of test portion: Formula revised, Loading the drum: Order changed)
- Calculation and expression of results: the re-testing criteria have been amended and supplemented with Dixon test guidelines
- Test report: required and optional data have harmonized according to document CEN/TC 154/SC 6 – N 1120
