What is ISO 19204 about ?

ISO 19204 is the fourth part of a multi-series of international standards. ISO 19204 specifies procedures for testing the strength of hardened concrete.

Who is ISO 19204 for ?

ISO 19204 on hardened concrete is useful for:

  • Concrete manufacturers
  • Builders

Why should you use ISO 19204 ?

Hardened concrete gains strength with time and testing of concrete is necessary to ensure quality control and quality assurance of a concrete structure. ISO 19204 explains the test procedures and apparatus used to determine the compressive strength of hardened concrete.

Also, provides requirements on the type of specimen: cube, cylinder or core, method of adjustment, compressive strength of specimen (to the nearest 0,1 MPa), and the type of failure (satisfactory or unsatisfactory, and, if unsatisfactory, the nearest type).

ISO 19204 explains the test procedures and apparatus used to determine flexural strength providing a method of loading: two-point/centre point and the flexural strength of specimen (to the nearest 0,1 MPa).

ISO 19204 explains the test procedures and apparatus used to determine tensile splitting strength giving the measure of the maximum load, the appearance of the concrete, the location of the fracture and the appearance of the fracture surface.

ISO 19204 provides the precision data for measurements of compressive strength and hence these test methods let you manufacture the concrete and test hardened concrete to determine the suitability of structural properties by assessing the strength and other properties such as corrosion of reinforcement, permeability, cracking, and void structure.

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS ISO 19204:2020 replaces ISO 1920-4:2005. BS ISO 19204:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 1920-4:2005. These include:

  • The requirements for the compressive testing machine have been included and defined
  • The testing age and number of specimens that need to be tested have been included and defined
  • The sub clause on loading has been updated
