What is BS EN 1239016 - Determining the shrinkage of concrete about?

BS EN 12390 is a European standard that discusses the testing of hardened concrete.

BS EN 12390-16 discusses the testing of hardened concrete. Hardened concrete is the strongest and most durable construction material.

BS EN 1239016 specifies the procedure for determining the shrinkage of concrete specimens in drying conditions. The test is suitable for specimens with a declared D value of the coarsest fraction of aggregates used in the concrete (Dmax), not greater than 32 mm.

Note-

Possible shrinkage or length changes occurring before 24 h of age, and which could have significant amplitude and/or consequences, in case of restraint, could need to be measured according to a complementary procedure not covered by BS EN 1239016.

Who is BS EN 1239016 - Determining the shrinkage of concrete for?

BS EN 1239016 on determining the shrinkage of concrete for testing hardened concrete is applicable for:

  • Quality testers of concrete
  • Civil engineers
  • Contractors

Why should you use BS EN 1239016 - Determining the shrinkage of concrete?

Concrete shrinkage is defined as the reduction in volume over time and is mainly due to the water movement within a concrete’s porous structure and to chemical reactions.

BS EN 1239016 provides you with guidance for different types of shrinkages such as:

  • Total shrinkage which is a relative change in defined conditions of temperature and relative humidity.
  • Autogenous shrinkage is a relative change occurring in isothermal conditions and the absence of moisture exchange between the specimen and the surrounding environment.

BS EN 1239016 describes the principle of Test specimens that are subject to changes in length in defined conditions of temperature and relative humidity.

BS EN 1239016 provides you with the guidance for the procedure of when the specimen is demoulded at (24 ± 1) h from the time of casting.

By using BS EN 1239016 you are able to understand the determination of the total shrinkage of concrete
