What is PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 - Telecontrol equipment and systems about?

PD IEC/TS 60870 is a series on telecontrol equipment and systems. Telecontrol equipment and systems refer to the connection of process stations spread out over a wide area to central control systems. PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 describes messages and data formats for implementing IEC/TS 62351-5 for secure authentication as an extension to IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104. The purpose of PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 is to permit the receiver of any Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) to verify that the APDU was transmitted by an authorized user and that the APDU was not modified in transit. PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 provides methods to authenticate not only the device which originated the APDU but also the individual human user if that capability is supported by the rest of the telecontrol system.

PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 is also intended to be used, together with the definitions of IEC/TS 62351-3, in conjunction with the IEC 60870-5-104 companion standard. PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 describes only the message formats, selected options, critical operations, addressing considerations and other adaptations required to implement IEC/TS 62351 in the IEC 60870-5-101 and 104 protocols.

Note: The scope of PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 does not include security for IEC 60870-5-102 or IEC 60870-5-103

Who is PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 - Telecontrol equipment and systems for?

PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 on telecontrol equipment and systems is useful for:

  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 - Telecontrol equipment and systems

Telecontrol is the monitoring and control of remote systems by means of signal-converting methods. This can be done from one or more locations. Telecontrol technology distinguishes between individual telecontrol stations and higher-level telecontrol control centres. PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 specifies an overview of the clause, MAC algorithms, encryption algorithms, maximum error count and use of aggressive mode.

Operations considered critical, addressing information, implementation of messages, implementation of procedures, implementation of IEC/TS 62351-3 using IEC 60870-5-104 and protocol implementation conformance statements are specified in detail in PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7. Using PD IEC/TS 60870-5-7 you can describe messages and data formats for implementing IEC/TS 62351-5 for secure authentication as an extension to IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104.
