What is BS EN 13082 - Tanks for transport of dangerous goods about?

BS EN 13082 discusses tanks for the transport of dangerous goods. Dangerous goods in packaged form transported must be classified packaged, marked, labelled and the vehicle carrying the goods appropriately marked according to the rules. BS EN 13082 covers the vapour transfer valve, used for the transfer of vapour between the tank compartment and the pipework connecting to the vapour collection adaptor.

BS EN 13082 specifies the performance requirements and the critical dimensions of the vapour transfer valve. BS EN 13082 also specifies the tests necessary to verify the compliance of the equipment with this European Standard. The equipment specified by BS EN 13082 is suitable for use with liquid petroleum products and other dangerous substances of Class 3 of ADR [2] which have a vapour pressure not exceeding 110 kPa at 50 °C and petrol, and which have no sub-classification as toxic or corrosive.

Who is BS EN 13082 - Tanks for transport of dangerous goods for?

BS EN 13082 on tanks for the transport of dangerous goods is useful for:

  • Transport tanks manufacturers
  • Valve manufacturers
  • Design engineer
  • Quality control personnel
  • Research and development facilities

Why should you use BS EN 13082 - Tanks for transport of dangerous goods

Dangerous goods (also known as hazardous materials or hazmat) are articles or substances which can pose a hazard to health, safety, property, or the environment. BS EN 13082 discusses the vapour transfer valve, which governs the transfer of vapour between the vehicle compartment, the gantry equipment and the service-station tank storage during loading and unloading operations. The vapour transfer valve when opened, allows the transfer of vapour between the tank compartment and the vapour collection manifold, ensuring the confinement of the transported vapour and/or liquid in any orientation.

BS EN 13082 specifies two classes of tests, production tests and type tests. And the tests are comprised of shell strength test, shell tightness test, internal seat tightness test, mechanical endurance test, and drop test. Using these tests, you can specify the performance requirements and the critical dimensions of the vapour transfer valve.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13082:2008+A1:2012 supersedes BS EN 13082:2008. BS EN 13082:2008+A1:2012 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13082:2008. These include:

  • In the Foreword, the second sentence of the fifth paragraph has been deleted
  • In Clause 4, it has been added that the vapour transfer valve shall be provided with a means to indicate that it is open
