What is BS EN 14433 - Foot valves about?
BS EN 14433 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for foot valves for use on transportable tanks with minimum working pressure greater than 50 kPa for the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail.
BS EN 14433 is applicable to metallic equipment for use on tanks with gravity and/or pressure bottom loading and discharge for liquid chemicals and liquefied gases. BS EN 14433 includes carbon dioxide while excluding refrigerated liquefied gases.
Note: BS EN 14433 is also applicable to liquefied gases including LPG, however, for a dedicated LPG standard see EN 13175.

Why should you use BS EN 14433 - Foot valves?
The foot valve protects the pump from dry runs caused by fluid or gas backflow from the pipe. The foot valve is a check valve that permits unidirectional substance passage in the pipe while maintaining the pump prime and preventing damage. In a suction lift application, the foot valve is normally located at the bottom of the pipeline.

What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 14433:2014 supersedes EN 14433:2006, which is withdrawn. BS EN 14433:2014 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 14433:2006. These include:
- The scope of the standard has been enlarged to include liquefied gases
- The references to adr/rid have been included in the respective clauses of the main part of the standard
- The normative references have been updated
- Change of test conditions (test pressure, hold time)
