What is BS EN 63075- High-temperature superconducting AC power cables about?

BS EN 63075 is a European standard that discusses superconducting cable systems.

BS EN 63075 specifies test methods and requirements for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) AC power cable systems, cables, and their accessories.

BS EN 63075 applies to fixed installations, or rated voltages from 6 kV (Um = 7,2 kV) up to and including 500 kV (Um = 550 kV). The requirements apply to single-core, three-core, and three-phase concentric cables with cold dielectric and their accessories that are not intended for fault current limitation purposes.

Note: BS EN 63075 does not cover special cables and their accessories, such as fault current limiting cables or submarine cables, for which modifications to the standard tests maybe necessary or special test conditions may need to be devised.

Who is BS EN 63075- HTS AC power cables for?

BS EN 63075 on HTS AC power cables is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of HTS AC power cables
  • Thermal power stations
  • Power distribution and transmission applications
  • Electrical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 63075?

Over the past decade, superconducting AC power cables have become an indispensable part of power-dense electric transmission applications. However, proper design and manufacture is vital for long-term integrity of the overall power system.

BS EN 63075 walks you through best industry requirements for voltage and current designations, cable materials and characteristics, and accessory characteristics, along with type tests for oversheathing compounds and materials. Additionally, test methods such as the pressure test and vacuum leak test are also provided by BS EN 63075 that provide indications on dielectric strength and the product’s ability to withstand voltages. With standardized type-tests, you can demonstrate satisfactory performance characteristics of HTS AC power cables to meet the intended application need.

Overall, compliance with BS EN 63075 can ensure manufacture of loss-less cables and wires that maintain power system integrity and prevent product failures.
