What is ISO 8836 about?
ISO 8836 discusses suction catheters for use in the respiratory tract. ISO 8836 outlines dimensions and requirements for both open and closed suction catheters made of flexible materials. Suction catheters are intended for use in suctioning of the respiratory tract.
Open and closed Suction catheters intended for use with flammable anaesthetic gases or agents, lasers, or electrosurgical equipment are not covered by ISO 8836.

What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 8836:2020 supersedes ISO 8836:2014, which has been withdrawn. BS EN ISO 8836:2020 has some technical changes with respect to ISO 8836:2014. These include:
- It is no longer a requirement to have only a male-type suction catheter connector on the suction catheter
- The female-type suction catheter connector has been reinstated following removal in the fourth edition of this document
- The terms and definitions have been revised
- The conditions for the measurement of residual vacuum in closed suction catheters have been revised
