What is ISO 6302 about?  

ISO 630-2 is the second part in the multi-series of International Standards on ‘Steels for structural purposes’. ISO 6302 specifies qualities for steels for general structural use.  

ISO 6302 applies to steel plates rolled on a reversing mill, wide flats, hot-rolled sections and bars, which are used in the as-delivered condition and normally intended for welded or bolted structures. 

ISO 630covers 8 steel grades and 4 qualities. Grades S235, S275, S355, and S460 are covered in Annex A. Grades SG205, SG250, SG285 and SG345 are covered in Annex B. Not all grades are available in all qualities, and some qualities have Charpy Vnotch requirements. 

The steels specified in ISO 6302 apply to hot-rolled flat products and sections with: 

  • Thicknesses ≥ 3 mm and ≤ 150 mm for long products of steel grade S460 all qualities; 
  • Thicknesses ≥ 3 mm and ≤ 250 mm for long products or ≤ 400 mm for flat products of all other grades and qualities; and no restriction on nominal thickness for grades SG205, SG250, SG285, and SG345 for flat products, sections and long products.

Why should you use ISO 6302?  

Structural steel is a category of steel used for making construction materials in a variety of shapes. 

ISO 6302 specifies eight steel grades. Each grade is available in up to  four qualities. These grades and qualities differ in their specified mechanical properties and impact energy requirements.  

ISO 6302 provides information on classification and designation of grades and qualities of the steel, steelmaking process, delivery condition, chemical composition, mechanical properties and the surface condition required to manufacture high-quality structural steel. 

Charpy V-notch test, tensile test and impact test is provided in ISO 6302.

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS ISO 6302:2021 supersedes BS ISO 6302:2011, which has been withdrawn. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows: 

  • Applicable thickness ranges have been added in the Scope 
  • Additional terms and definitions concerning heat treatments have been deleted because ISO 4885 is in normative references of ISO 6301 
  • Test units have been updated 
  • In Tables, the designation concerning thickness has been changed into “nominal thickness” 
  • The content of the document has been updated to harmonize with all parts of ISO 630
