What is BS ISO 19427 about?

BS ISO 19427 is one of a series of International Standards applicable to steel wire ropes of pre-fabricated parallel wire strands for suspension bridge main cable. BS ISO 19427 specifies the production methods, specifications, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marks, packing, transportation and storage for pre-fabricated parallel wire strand (PPWS). These PPWS are made of hot-dip galvanized or zinc-aluminium coated high tensile steel wires. With BS ISO 19427, you can impart structural integrity to suspension bridges.

Note: Welds are not allowed in the wires in PPWS.

Who is BS ISO 19427 for?

BS ISO 19427 on steel wire ropes for suspension bridge main cable is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of hot -dip galvanized or zinc-aluminium coated steel wire ropes
  • Independent bodies undertaking testing, marking, storage and transportation of steel wire ropes
  • Suppliers of cables and wires
  • Civil engineers
  • Contractors

Why should you use BS ISO 19427?

As suspension bridges carry vertical loads through main cables and suspenders, production and testing of steel wire ropes through BS ISO 19427’s guidance ensures of tensile and durable support to the overall structure. This is confirmed through parameters for wires such as corrosion protection, length and fabrication tolerances, elasticity and lubrication in the core, inside wires and outside surface, that fall in the ambit of BS ISO 19427.

BS ISO 19427 is useful through various stages, from production of PPWS to its usage in construction of bridges; including inspection, identification, marking, storage and handling and transportation. Storage and handling requirements ensure both PPWS and sockets are protected against mechanical wear and tear and precipitation. Meanwhile identification and marking requirements provide the end-user with the manufacturers certificate of test, enhancing reliability and confidence in the product usage.
