What is BS EN 10293 about?

BS EN 10293 is a European standard on steel castings that discusses the criteria for manufacturing high-quality steel castings.

BS EN 10293 applies to steel castings:

  • For general engineering uses. Its uses include machinery (mechanical, electrical...), automotive industries, railroad, armament, agricultural equipment, mining, etc.

In cases where castings are joined by welding by the founder, BS EN 10293 applies.

NOTE: BS EN 10293 does not apply in cases where castings are welded:

  • To wrought products (plates, tubes, forgings...)
  • By non-founders

Who is BS EN 10293 for?

BS EN 10293 on steel castings is relevant to:

  • Design engineers, and quality managers
  • Manufacturers and foundries involved with transport - automotive, rail, and marine
  • Manufacturers and foundries involved with mining
  • Energy generators – turbines

Why should you use BS EN 10293?

A steel casting is a product formed by pouring molten steel into a mold cavity. The liquid steel cools and solidifies in the mold cavity and is then removed for cleaning. Heat treating may be required to meet desired properties.

The guidelines covered in BS EN 10293 include specification to be supplied by the purchaser, designation, manufacturing process, requirements for testing, identification and marking, packaging, and surface protection. BS EN 10293  also offers guidance on welding.

As a user of BS EN 10293, you can be ensured of the manufacturing process, testing methods, identification, marking, packaging of steel casting. With obedience and compliance to BS EN 10293, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality steel castings. BS EN 10293 helps you to build consumer trust and confidence in the product. With BS EN 10293 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 10293:2015 supersedes BS EN 10293:2015 which is withdrawn.

In comparison with EN 10293:2005, the following significant technical changes were made:

  • Alignment with the structure of EN 1559-1:2011, "Founding - Technical conditions of delivery - Part 1: General" and EN 1559-2:2014 "Founding - Technical conditions of delivery - Part 2: Additional requirements for steel castings"
  • New grades (GE270, GE320, and GE360) were added
