What is ISO 12863 - Assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes about ?

ISO 12863 is an international standard that serves technical specifications for assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes, enabling the reducing fire incidence relating to cigarettes.

ISO 12863 provides a standard assessment of the capability of a cigarette, positioned on one of three standard substrates, to extinguish or generate sufficient heat to continue burning, and thus potentially cause ignition of bedding or upholstered furniture.

ISO 12863 applies to factory-made cigarettes that burn along the length of a tobacco column.

ISO 12863 is a performance-based standard. The output has been correlated with the potential for cigarettes to ignite upholstered furniture.

Note: ISO 12863 does not prescribe any cigarette design features that might lead to improved or degraded performance.

Who is ISO 12863 - Assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes for ?

ISO 12863 on assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes applies to:

  • Manufacturers of cigarettes
  • Dealers and importers of cigarettes
  • Testing labs for cigarettes
  • Regulatory bodies

Why should you use ISO 12863 - Assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes ?

Burning cigarettes are a common culprit of fatal fires due to dropping into a bed or piece of upholstered furniture. The burning cigarette heats the furnishing materials to the point where smouldering combustion begins. Limiting the frequency of ignitions reduces fire loss; it is desirable to establish a test method for the propensity of a cigarette to ignite soft furnishings.

ISO 12863 provides users guidance on general principle, apparatus, verification of test equipment, test specimens, standard substrate assemblies, ensuring the accurate assessment of ignition propensity of cigarettes.

ISO 12863 provides users guidance on the standard method for assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes. ISO 12863 also provides users with step-by-step guidance, enabling users to do the method correctly.

The adoption of ISO 12863 allows users to assess the ignition propensity of cigarettes, enabling the reduction of fire incidence and prevention of fire-related mortality from smoking.

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS EN ISO 12863:2010+A1:2016 supersedes BS EN ISO 12863:2010, which is now withdrawn.
