What is BS EN IEC 60317-74- Polyesterimide enamelled rectangular aluminium wire about?

This part of IEC 60317 forms an element of a series of standards which deals with insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment.

BS EN IEC 60317-74 is the 74th part of a multi-series that specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular aluminum winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which can be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements.

NOTE: A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics.

The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is:

  • Width: min. 2,0 mm max. 16,0 mm
  • Thickness: min. 0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm

Who is BS EN IEC 60317-74- Polyesterimide enamelled rectangular aluminium wire for?

BS EN IEC 60317-74 on particular types of winding wires is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of winding wires
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of polyesterimide enamelled aluminium wire
  • Manufacturers of electrical equipment
  • Electrical engineers

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60317-74- Polyesterimide enamelled rectangular aluminium wire?

Winding wires are largely used in the construction of applications such as transformers, motors and generators. The main purpose of a winding wire is to interchange electrical energy with magnetic energy. With regards to polyesterimide, it is a resin that has undergone a chemical change or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics.

BS EN IEC 60317-74 provides you with the range of nominal conductor diameters based on two grades. You can also find the values for resistance to abrasion for these two grades along with reference to standards for recommended dimensions, solderability temperature index, electrical resistance, elongation, appearance and pinhole test.

Adopting the specifications for the particular type of winding wire in compliance with BS EN IEC 60317-74 can ensure properties such as mechanical strength, temperature and heat resistance remain intact for the optimal performance of your specific application, without loss of the chemical properties of the resin.

This can help make the right production decisions based on thickness and grade, to ensure durability and long service life of polyesterimide enamelled round aluminium wires, and to achieve the necessary electrical strength.
