What is BS EN 60317-0-7 - Fully insulated (FIW) zero defect enamelled wires about?

This part of IEC 60317 forms an element of a series of standards that deals with insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment. The main objective of the series is to ensure winding wires offer optimum electric strength and service life, and to minimize the risk of product failure.

BS EN 60317-0-7 establishes general requirements for fully insulated (FIW) zero-defect enamelled round copper wires. The nominal conductor diameter range is given in the relevant technical specification.

Who is BS EN 60317-0-7- FIW zero defect enamelled wires for?

BS EN 60317-0-7 on particular types of winding wires is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of copper winding wires
  • Manufacturers of electrical applications such as generators, transformers, etc
  • Electrical engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Product design engineers

Why should you use BS EN 60317-0-7- FIW zero defect enamelled wires?

Winding wires are largely used in the construction of applications such as transformers, motors, and generators. The main purpose of a winding wire is to interchange electrical energy with magnetic energy.

BS EN 60317-0-7 includes winding wires FIW zero-defect enamelled round copper wire and provides two grades of thickness for coatings.

BS EN 60317-0-7 provides specifications on the appearance, dimensions, and physical properties of winding wires including elongation, durability, resistance, flexibility, and adherence. Limit values for elongation at break and maximum springback, as well specifications for the mandrel winding test have been covered.

Adopting the specifications for the particular type of winding wire in compliance with BS EN 60317-0-7 can ensure properties such as temperature and heat resistance remain intact for the optimal performance of your specific application.

This can help make the right production decisions to ensure durability and long service life of FIW zero defect enamelled round copper wire, to achieve the necessary electrical strength.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60317-0-7:2017 and replaces the first edition published in 2012. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • Reduction in the number of grades of FIW from 3 through 9 to 4, 6, and 8 only
  • Reduction of the wire diameter range from (0,040 to 1,000) mm to (0,090 to 0,900) mm for several requirements
  • Revision of Clause 5 to delete the Table 2 resistance requirements
