What is BS EN 15824 - Organic binder renders and plasters about?

BS EN 15824 is a European standard on the organic binder that specifies the features of binder used in renders and plasters for your building structure.

BS EN 15824 is applicable to factory-made renders and plasters based on organic binders used for external or internal covering on walls, columns, partitions and ceilings. The products are manufactured in paste form, ready to use, or in powder form.

BS EN 15824 is also applicable to renders and plasters with inorganic binders such as silicates, silanes, siloxanes and silicones.

BS EN 15824 contains definitions and final performance requirements and includes relevant characteristic categories to designate renders and plasters.

BS EN 15824 provides for the assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) of the product with the marking requirement for products.

BS EN 15824 may be used for the definition of renders and plasters in conjunction with codes of application and national specifications for execution of works.

NOTE: BS EN 15824 is not applicable to coating materials and coating systems.

NOTE: BS EN 15824 does not contain recommendations for the design and application of renders and plasters.

Who is BS EN 15824 - Organic binder renders and plasters for?

BS EN 15824 on organic binders is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of binders and aggregates
  • Binder render and plaster manufacturers and suppliers
  • Personnel of quality control system

Why should you use BS EN 15824 - Organic binder renders and plasters

Renders and plasters can form the final surface of the structure, textured or not, or they can provide a levelling of the substrate, adequately smooth for subsequent decorative treatments.

BS EN 15824 provides the requirements on characteristics for dried and hardened renders and plasters.

BS EN 15824 navigates you through the test methods and procedures on renders and plasters in paste and powder to ensure the physical and mechanical properties of organic binders.

Description and designation of the render or plaster are described in BS EN 15824 along with the marking and labelling of the product.

BS EN 15824 provides the conformity assessment that is needed to demonstrate product-type determination with the compliance of the requirements and the performance declarations of the product by type testing and factory production control system.

Furthermore, BS EN 15824 guides you through the selection of the appropriate binder for renders and plasters ensuring its workability, adhesion, flexibility, mechanical resistance, hydrophobicity or weatherability.

In this way, you can procure render and plasters for your structure offering protective surface finishes and forming decorative elements that improve their performance and increase their longevity.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15824:2017 supersedes BS EN 15824:2009. BS EN 15824:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 15824:2009. These include:

  • Implementation of new regulatory (CPR) terminology where relevant
  • Revised text in Thermal conductivity (deriving from EN 998-2)
  • Revised clauses on Assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP)
  • New annex with indicative frequencies on testing for factory production control
  • Some minor editorial changes.
