What is BS 4145 - Requirement for glass mica boards for electrical purpose about?

BS 4145 specifies requirements for boards for electrical purposes, made from glass bonded mica powder, from 1/8 in (3.2 mm) up to 1/2 in (12.7 mm) in thickness.

Two types of board are covered in BS 4145, both of which are incombustible.

The boards have good resistance to arcing, good mechanical properties and can be machined provided suitable techniques are employed. The boards are suitable for use as arc shields, terminal boards and high temperature panels.

The density of the boards covered by BS 4145 may be taken as approximately 0.09 lb/in3 (2.5 g/cm3). Density is not, however, a guide to the quality of the board.

Who is BS 4145 - Requirement for glass mica boards for electrical purpose for?

BS 4145 on glass mica board is useful for:

  • Electrical engineer
  • Manufacturer of heavy electrical equipment
  • Manufacturer of electrical appliances
  • Power Distribution companies

Why should you use BS 4145 - Requirement for glass mica boards for electrical purpose?

Glass mica boards are used as insulator for electrical purpose. They are very common in use due to their flexibility and resistance to heat and chemical reactions.

BS 4145 provides information so that user can select and prevent future damage through inspection.

BS 4145 provides best practice guidelines to test properties of glass mica boards, they are

  • Carbon arc test
  • Spirit burner test

BS 4145 help to make selection procedure standardise by providing specification such as

  • Classification
  • Finish
  • Flatness
  • Thickness
  • Electric strength proof test in oil
  • Surface electric strength proof test in air
  • Insulation resistance
  • Water absorption
  • Deformation under compression
  • Shear strength
  • Cross-breaking strength

Using BS 4145 for selection and inspection can help user avoid accidents and damage due to short circuits, electric shocks. In turn make electrical system reliable and long lasting.
