What is BS 2586 - Glass electrodes about?

BS 2586  specifies the performance requirements and other essential characteristics of glass electrodes responsive to hydrogen ions, reference electrodes and glass combination electrodes for general laboratory use.

The most common application of ion-selective glass electrodes is for the measurement of pH. The pH electrode is an example of a glass electrode that is sensitive to hydrogen ions. Glass electrodes play an important part in the instrumentation for chemical analysis and physicochemical studies.

Who is BS 2586- Glass electrodes for?

BS 2586 on the performance requirements and other essential characteristics of glass electrodes is useful for:

  • Laboratory equipment manufacturers
  • Glass manufacturers
  • Scientific instrument manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS 2586- Glass electrodes

The pH glass electrode is an electrode responsive to hydrogen ions and consists of a bulb, or other suitable form made of special glass, attached to a stem of high resistance material, complete with an internal reference electrode and internal filling solution.

BS 2586 provides you with the pH range and usable temperature range and guides you on the general construction and electrical requirements of the pH glass electrodes. BS 2586 provides you with the performance requirements at 25 °C.

BS 2586  guides you on information to be given integrally with the pH glass electrode and a summary of information to be given in the literature provided with pH glass electrodes. BS 2586   also provides you with requirements of reference electrodes and pH combination or dual electrodes. BS 2586  helps you manufacture high-quality pH glass electrodes
