What is BS 1104 - Acme screw thread specifications about?
The Acme screw thread is extensively used for a variety of purposes and the need has been established for a range of threads for different classes of work. BS 1104 discusses standards for acme screw threads used for general engineering purposes. Four classes of threads are provided designated 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G.
BS 1104 recommends a standard series of diameters and associated pitches for general purpose acme form screw threads, for the nominal size range 1/4 in. to 5 in. BS 1104 gives recommendations regarding the types and dimensions of gauges to be used.
BS 1104 specifies the limiting dimensions, tolerances and allowances for four classes of thread.
Information is also provided whereby the limiting dimensions for any other screw thread of Acme form may be determined, but the use of these special diameter/pitch combinations should be avoided wherever possible.
Note: The threads in BS 1104 are not intended for application where centralizing is necessary; such threads do not form part of BS 1104.
Who is BS 1104 - Acme screw thread specifications for?
BS 1104 on acme screw thread specifications is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of acme screw threads
- Mechanical engineers
- Design engineers
- Organizations that design and maintain acme screw threads
- Industries where acme screw threads are used
- Research and development team
- Inspection bodies
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS 1104 - Acme screw thread specifications?
BS 1104 specifies general purpose threads for classes 2G, 3G and 4G threads have clearance on all diameters for free lateral movement to accommodate possible errors in alignment of the axis of the fixed nut and that of the screw which engages with it.
BS 1104 covers basic dimension specifications of the standard series of general-purpose acme screw threads. BS 1104 provides you with effective diameter tolerances for an extended range of diameter/pitch combinations for the four classes of thread.
BS 1104 also provides you with limits and tolerances which relate to single-start Acme threads and may be used, if considered suitable, for multi-start Acme threads. Following guidelines provided in BS 1104, lets you manufacture and supply high-quality and durable acme screw threads to your customers. These customers will be able to safely use the acme screw threads.
